IIT seeks an energetic, well-organized individual committed to the conservation of Islesboro natural resources.

The Stewardship Assistant will work with the Executive Director and others to provide stewardship of Preserves and other related assistance. This is an hourly, part-time, entry-level, professional land trust position. Principal work tasks include monitoring and engaging in projects at IIT’s 13 Preserves, undertaking and managing volunteer trail and
Preserve work, and occasionally assisting with educational and other activities related to IIT’s Preserves.

Qualifications include an engaged intellect and significant experience in chainsaw and power tool use, general computer skills, innovation and initiative, a well-organized work style, capacity to manage diverse activities, attention to detail and accuracy, a willingness to work independently and as part of a team, high energy and commitment to the IIT mission of land protection, environmental education and advocacy.


1. Work with Executive Director and volunteers to create and maintain trails and manage the social and conservation values of IIT Preserves;
2. Develop understanding of and appreciation for the special ecological characteristics of IIT Preserves;
3. Maintain the several miles of IIT trails to safe, consistently high standards;
4. Undertake other specific Preserve management needs, often with others, including but not limited to repairing and building bridges and kiosks, creating outdoor rooms and installing amenities;
5. Explore ways to incorporate volunteers in Preserve management activities, such as coordinating a volunteer trail day or an adopt-a-trail program;
6. Continue to gather, collate, summarize and memorialize Preserve characteristics for management and educational uses;
7. Identify and create plans to address natural resource and land uses issues at each Preserve;
8. Occasionally assist with outdoor educational and other IIT events; and
9. Become familiar with and occasionally assist in other IIT land conservation, natural resource education and environmental advocacy work.

Skills and Abilities

1. Experience and competency with chainsaws and various power and hand tools;
2. Self-motivated and well-organized;
3. Works well independently and in a team setting;
4. Cooperative and harmonious in community setting;
5. Capable of multitasking;
6. Interest in land trusts generally and Islesboro Islands Trust specifically;
7. Basic computer skills;
8. Skilled in volunteer development and community outreach;


1. Engaged intellect and experience in ecological sciences and land management; and
2. Love of nature and familiarity with ecology.

The right candidate will receive twenty-five dollars ($25.00) per hour rate for two days per week year round. Benefits
include paid sick and personal days after six months employment and chance to work in a beautiful, ecologically healthy environment.
