Island Explorations

Island Explorations is our original nature day camp for young people ages 3 to 6. Each week of the summer, we offer age-appropriate activities at a different location around the island. Our guiding philosophy is one of thoughtful, fun, place-based environmental education. We focus on guided exploration, learning through direct experience, building empathy, and having fun! Please call (207)-734-6907 or email Steve Miller for more information.

Island Expeditions

Come explore the world of water! Through this program provided for 6-11 year old children, we will begin to understand the Water Cycle by examining the major Watersheds of Islesboro, and the forms that they take. We encourage critical thinking skills, personal empowerment, and positive connections with the Islesboro landscape that last a lifetime. Please call (207)-734-6907 or email  for more information.

School Programs

IIT has an excellent working partnership with the Islesboro Central School and Island Preschool. We organize field and classroom-based environmental education during the school year, and work closely with teachers to design programs that fit well with their curriculum. Please check our News and Events page for information on recent activities! IIT also sponsors annual Student Conservation Awards for outstanding elementary, middle, and high school students.

Adult Nature Walks

Each summer, IIT offers a free series of nature walks for adults and families. Each walk is hosted by an IIT staff member or local expert, and offers a great opportunity to explore Islesboro’s outdoors in the company of a knowledgeable guide. Recent topics have included native plants and wildflowers, intertidal ecology, birding, and geology. Please call (207)-734-6907 or email Steve Miller for more information. Please check out our caldendar for an up-to-date schedule of walks.

We also have a variety of books available in our Conservation Library, which can be seen by appointment. Please call (207)-734-6907 if you’d like to set up a time to browse our selection of reference volumes.
