Policies for Using the Preserves and Trails

Islesboro Islands Trust’s trail system provides community access to some of the most scenic and wild places on the island. We encourage visitors to use our trails for foot travel, wildlife observation, and other quiet, nature-oriented activities. If you would like to use a preserve for a personal or business project or group tour or event, find more information below.

Preserve and Trail Use Guidelines

  • Stay on marked trail (blazed with blue paint)

  • Foot travel only – no biking or vehicles of any kind are permitted

  • Leave no trace*.

    • Do not build structures

    • Do not build fire pits - fires are not allowed.

    • Do not place unauthorized benches or objects on the preserves.

  • *Exceptions:

    • fairy houses

    • small-scale impermanent nature art

    • small cairns

    • sand castles

  • Control and clean up after your dog, do not leave dog waste bags on trail or in parking areas

  • Please carry out all litter

  • Respect the rights of neighboring landowners

  • No trapping

  • No fires

  • No smoking or alcoholic beverages

  • No camping

  • Keep your distance from wildlife, especially nesting birds

Other Uses

If you would like to use a preserve or trail as part of a personal project, business endeavor, or group tour or event, you must contact the office for permission and fill out a release form. Please provide a detailed description of how you would like to use the preserve and for what ends.
